entacapone (in-tack-a-pohn)is used in combination with levodopa/carbidopa to treat parkinson's disease, sometimes referred to as shaking palsy. it is prescribed when doses of the combination drug levodopa/carbidopa (sinemet) begin to wear off too soon.

comtan is a catechol-o-methyltransferase (comt) inhibitor. some patients experience signs and symptoms of end-of-dose "wearing-off" effect despite taking levodopa/carbidopa.

entacapone enhances the effect of levodopa/carbidopa. it has no effect if it is used on its own. it works by increasing the levels of levodopa/carbidopa in the brain, thereby enhancing its effectiveness.

cautions -do not stop using this medicine without first checking with your doctor. do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness. this medicine may color the urine brownish orange. do not take this medicine if you are also taking phenelzine or tranylcypromine. inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. this is normal.

drug interactions -drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job.

before using -some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine. if you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby. check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience continuing nausea, loss of appetite, unusual fatigue, itching, hallucinations, shortness of breath, forgetfulness, flu-like symptoms, high fever, muscle pain or severe muscle rigidity, or confusion. additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking isoproterenol or bitolterol. check drug interactions

if you take too much -if overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

additional information -do not share this medicine with others for whom it was not prescribed. keep this medicine out of the reach of children. using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. this medicine may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. if using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out. this medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. to prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. it is unknown if this medicine is excreted in breast milk. do not take 2 doses at once. store this medicine at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees f (15 and 30 degrees c), away from heat and light.
